Archetypes

The HeriTACE project targets small and medium-sized historical townhouses in cities throughout the EU

The Archetypes are representative examples of historical townhouses, reflecting specific building periods and architectural styles. The HeriTACE project Archetypes are defined by relevant typologies of townhouses predating 1945 in the four historical cities in three climate zones, encompassing the city of Ghent in Belgium, Mantova in Italy, Tallinn in Estonia, and Trondheim in Norway. The Archetypes account for 1% to 10% of the residential building stock in these countries, and similar types can be found throughout the EU. The buildings are usually used as homes, small apartments, offices, or shops. The level of heritage conservation protection can vary—from rules that only cover the parts of the building visible from the street, to full heritage listing, where strict restrictions apply.

The Case Studies consist of a group of real-life buildings that correspond to a defined Archetype. In the HeriTACE project, the Case Studies were selected for measurements, monitoring, interviews, and tests, addressing their aesthetic, architectural, historical, scientific, cultural, experiential, and social values. The data collected from these case studies are used to validate the technical solutions and methodologies developed by the HeriTACE project for each defined archetype.
